Happy first birthday sweet Skylar! I was invited to photograph Skylar’s doljanchi at her home in Watertown, MA. A doljanchi is a Korean first birthday party. This beautiful traditional custom was exploding with color. I kept peering up from my camera to take in all the beautiful ceremonial pieces and traditional items that made this party extra special. According to Wikipedia: “In the past, the death rates for children were high and many children died before their first birthday, so it [the doljanchi] was an important milestone for the baby and parents. The whole village used to celebrate a baby’s first birthday, sharing food and wishing for long life and fortune for the baby.” I was thrilled to be a part of the “village” that helped Skylar celebrate her big day!
