Smell is such a powerful sensation. The scent of snickerdoodle cookies brings me back to the age of six in my grandmother’s kitchen. One waft of the perfume I was wearing when I met my boyfriend, and I can remember all of the excitement of our first kiss. The smell of old books conjures up childhood summers spent in the public library, my head buried in adventures.
For this week’s theme of “low light,” I thought it would be fun to photograph one of my favorite smells: the captivating scent of incense (Nag Champa, to be exact). Call me a hippie, but I’ve been in love with this scent since my very first yoga classes 7 years ago. When I smell incense, I’m reminded of what it felt like to discover my inner and outer strength on my yoga mat. I’m reminded of cozy nights inside, just like this snowy evening, learning to appreciate time spent alone.
Project 52 was started by a lovely group of photographers from NAPCP, of which I am a proud member. Our goal for 2015 is to take weekly photographs that warm our hearts and challenge us at the same time, based on a theme that the group has decided. It’s an encouraging and inspiring environment for us to hone our craft and just enjoy photography for what it is: an art that we all LOVE.
