Photo day doesn’t have to be stressful…in fact, it can even be kinda fun! The tips below will help you show up with a genuine smile. 🙂
Pack your bag.
Comfy walking shoes
Bring comfy shoes for walking from location to location. Nothing makes a session less fun than blisters!
Leave valuables at home.
In the city, we’ll be around a lot of people and you’ll be focused on having your photos taken. Leave valuables at home so that you don’t have to worry about theft.
Something to sit on
I might ask you to sit down so that I can shoot from a higher angle. If you’re concerned about your outfit getting dirty, please bring along something small and waterproof that you can sit on.
Sometimes dirt/spit-up/food happens. It’s a good idea to have backup clothing on hand just in case!
Especially if you have pets!
Your child’s lovie or favorite toy is always a welcome addition to the session! You might also consider bringing a favorite book to read as a family.
Snacks + water
If the kids need a quick mood boost during the session, a little snack break sometimes goes a long way! And edible bribes are always helpful! 😉
Get there 30 minutes early.
The time we’ve chosen for your session is very specific for lighting reasons, and it’s super important that we start shooting right on time. Please arrive to your session location at least 30 minutes beforehand to allow time to find parking, make any last clothing adjustments, and find our meeting spot. If you know you tend to run late, I would even recommend getting there an hour ahead of time. Arriving early is the single most helpful thing you can do for a smooth session.
Clear your schedule.
If you can, take the day off of work and don’t schedule any activities for the kids. Give yourselves a relaxing morning at home and save your energy!
I know it can feel overwhelming to get everything ready, but try as hard as you can to stay calm around your children. Kids pick up on stress super easily and will be fussy at your session.
Frame it as fun!
Instead of telling your kids that we’re going to have photos taken, tell them that we’re going to have an adventure and go play with Miss Kate. Which is technically true! 😉
Naps + Snacks
Well-rested, well-fed kiddos are a must! Make sure they get a great nap before the session and that they’ve eaten. If you have an evening session, try to push naps a little later than usual if possible.
Avoid colorful drinks or lollipops within 24 hours of the shoot, and don’t let your kids eat or drink anything that will stain their face, teeth or mouths.
Check Yo’ Self
Here’s a simple checklist:
- keys/phones out of pockets
- fitbit/sports watches removed
- scrunchies off your wrists
- bag packed (see the list at the beginning of this post!)
- kids’ noses and eyes wiped
- clothing ironed & lint-rolled
If you or your child is sick, please stay home and feel better! There’s no fee to reschedule to a new date in case of illness. We will also reschedule if it’s raining, below freezing, or extremely overcast. I will be keeping an eye on the forecast in the days leading up to your session, and I’ll let you know the night before if we need to reschedule. I know it’s tempting to start checking the weather a week out, but Boston weather changes often and quickly. Sometimes a bad forecast turns into a gorgeous day!
