One of the most common things I hear from mamas is that they love to take pictures of their kids, but they’re never actually IN the photos! That is a pretty accurate summary of motherhood — always giving of yourself in time and energy and love, but forgetting to take a step back to appreciate the unconditional love given to you in return. And that is why I am SO HAPPY when moms like this one take the courageous step to reach out to me and get in front of the camera!
I wanted this mama to be able to SEE the tight family bond between her husband and her baby and how radiant she looks when she’s hugging them. And despite all of our pre-session planning and worrying about clothes and the weather, all of that simply melted away during our time together. The focus became their love and connection, and the endless supply of grins from their son. And that purpose is what gets me out of bed in the morning (5:30 in the morning in this case – ha!)
I also wanted to share something special from this mama’s pre-session questionnaire, which is a little form that I find so helpful to be able to create images for my clients exactly how they dreamed of them. In response to the question, “What are your hopes and goals for your photo session?”, here’s what she answered:
“I hope to have these photos as something to remember this special time by, especially as [my baby] grows older. I want to remember how tiny he is and his how rosy fat cheeks get even fatter when he smiles. I want to remember his little teeth and his hands. I want to remember how huge his head is in comparison to his body. I want the photos to capture the pure love and joy we feel just for the fact that he is here. I want to remember, when he is a teenager and a handful to say the least, that our life is complete and perfect because of him. By looking at these photos I want to be reminded of all the amazing things he has brought for us because, let’s face it, everybody just needs a little reminder from time to time…;)”
So in love with her answer, which is everything I believe in! Thank you, R, for inviting me to document this precious time in your lives!
