Erika is one of those people who instantly makes you feel like you’ve been friends for a long time, even right when you meet her. I was excited about her newborn session from our very first conversation!
She is a fellow creative spirit and takes a lot of joy in making her house a home (make sure to check out the nursery that she lovingly designed down below, including her very own artwork that looks straight out of a magazine!) She’s absolutely smitten with her little crew, and it was a joy to take their very first official family photos!
I will let Erika tell you a little bit more about her session – I love hearing my clients’ perspectives from the other side of the camera! 🙂
Please tell us about your family!
My husband and I were married for a year when we decided we wanted to try for a baby! Shortly thereafter, out popped Chip and we forget life before him. 🙂
Having a baby is challenging, but the three of us have really turned into the ‘Three Musketeers.’ Or should I say 4? Can’t forget about our dog Marni!
Right before we had Chip, we moved to Cohasset, MA. We love strolling around town and look forward to enjoying the beach in the summer.
How did you decide that this was the right time to hire a professional photographer?
I wanted to hire a newborn photographer so I could remember this special time in our lives…what we looked like, the obvious joy on our faces, and the moments of us together, holding each other close. I am a huge picture person, so it was important to me to capture him when he first arrived. 🙂
What location did you choose for your session?
It was held at our home. I wanted to capture pictures of us in our element so there was some naturalness to the photos. This also had significance because we had moved in about a month before and this was our first house as a family.

How did you plan your family’s clothing?
I wanted us to coordinate and have a summer beachy feel. I went to Nantucket Kids and found the cutest coastal Mommy & Me outfits and matched the hubby accordingly.
Was there anything you were nervous or worried about before hiring a photographer?
We were naturally nervous about looking tired and how we would feel taking pictures so fresh after having a baby, but we knew we wanted to capture us in the moment. Afterward we were ecstatic because the photos far exceeded our expectations. They were gorgeous and captured us perfectly.
Any funny stories or interesting happenings during your session?
Chip decided he wanted to cry the entire photoshoot! At the time we thought he was being a fussy baby. Turns out he had a milk allergy. We kept pumping him with milk assuming he was hungry. We didn’t know this early on! Poor guy!
Despite my son’s nonstop crying, my favorite part was how we all worked through it and managed to capture awesome images. Once he tuckered out we were able to relax and capture images of us just truly adoring and loving on him. He can look back on these images and see in our eyes how much we loved him already.
Of all the photos we took, which is your #1 favorite and why?
My favorite is this photo of the four of us (with our dog Marni) as a family smiling on the bed. We look so happy and we’re all in it!
Do you have any advice to other families before their photo session?
Not to stress! We had a baby that wouldn’t stop crying, and yet our photos couldn’t have turned out any better.
How have you used your new images?
I’ve blown up three of the images and have them in the playroom, and I also printed 16 of them for a gallery wall in the hall. Needless to say, we splurged for all of the digital files from our session! Every time we have people over, they comment on how gorgeous the photos are.
Why did you choose Kate L Photography?
The shots she captured were so beautiful, colorful and natural. I was confident she would capture us as a family and her aesthetic was right in line with mine.
Erika, thank you for sharing your beautiful family with us! xoxo
