Blurb book design is here!

One silver lining of the coronavirus lockdown is that I finally have time to offer a long-requested service: Blurb book design!

I create a Blurb book for every year of our family’s images, and I can honestly say that my Blurb photo books are some of my most prized possessions. I would grab them first if our house was on fire! Few things bring me as much joy as flipping through pages of happy memories. You can read more about my personal yearbooks here!

In response to that post, I receive hundreds of letters and questions from readers! So many of you have created your own books, but I often hear that the process can be overwhelming and hard to get started. Since I love to design these books, I’m excited to be able to offer this as a new service for you!

All you have to do is send me a folder of your favorite images, and I’ll use my design software to lay them out for you according to Blurb’s specifications! When I’m done, you’ll receive a ready-to-print PDF file, including all of the pages AND the cover. All you have to do is upload the files to Blurb to order your book. Super easy!

Frequently Asked
Questions
1Does this include a printed book?

No, this is a design service only. When your design is complete, I will deliver a printable PDF file that you can upload straight to Blurb for printing.

2How much will my book cost to print?

Take the number of images in your design and divide it in half in order to get your approximate page count. For instance, if you’re submitting 400 images, your final design’s page count will be approximately 200 pages (average of four images per spread/two images per page).

From there, you can use Blurb’s pricing calculator to figure out the approximate cost of printing your book. Use the following specifications:

  • Proline Pearl Paper (strongly recommended)
  • Size: Large Landscape (13×11)
  • Imagewrap, Hardcover

Blurb frequently runs sales of 35-40% off, so if you don’t see a sale now, it’s worth waiting a few weeks!

3What size will my book be?

I’ll be designing a 13″ x 11″ book (Large Landscape), which is my personal favorite size. If you’d like to request a different size, please let me know – this will not change your design price.

However, I’m only able to offer the special cover design (shown in the photos) in the 13×11 size. For books of a different size, your cover design will feature one large image on the front and one on the back.

4How many pages will be included in my design?

Typically I design about four images per spread (one spread = two pages). So if you’re ordering a design with 400 images, you can expect your book to be approximately 100 spreads (200 pages total).

5Can I request edits after receiving the book design?

This service is designed for you to print as-is, but you can request up to five minor edits after receiving your book file (i.e. removing an image, changing an image position, deleting a page, etc.) Additional edits will be billed at $75/hour.

6Can I use another printer besides Blurb?

Unfortunately no. Your design will be tailor-made specifically to Blurb’s printing specifications.

7Can I include text in my design?

This book design service is for images only. You’ll be able to choose the text that will appear on the cover and the spine of your book.

8Is the cover design included?

Yes! You have the option of the cover design shown below (room for 30 images) OR one giant image on the front/one giant image on the back. You’ll have the ability to choose which images are featured on the cover.

9How do I order my book design?

Hooray  – I can’t wait to work on this for you! Please fill out the order form at the very bottom of this page. Once I receive your order, I’ll send you an invoice for your custom design. Your design will be ready for you three weeks after your invoice is paid!

10How should I send you my photo files?

To send me the files, you can put the image files into one giant folder.

If you have subsections or a specific order that you want the photos to be in the book, you can use subfolders (for instance, you could organize by year, month, travel destination, etc).

Please label the subfolders with 01, 02, 03 etc at the beginning of the folder names so that I put them in your book in the right chronological order. Here’s an example to show you what I did for our wedding album when I made it!

Once you have your folders set up, you can upload the entire large container folder (including the subfolders) to Dropbox or Google Drive.

When you go to place your order at the bottom of this page, you can copy that Dropbox/Google Drive link directly into the order form.

If you need help with any of this, please feel free to email me at kate@kateLphotography.com!

Here are some examples of Blurb designs I’ve created! Each book pictured is approximately 230 pages. For more photos, including a flip-through video of a full album design, visit my Blurb book review!
