change is your friend: using FB timeline to build your brand

Whenever Facebook rolls out new changes, my news feed is often littered with complaints. However, I think Facebook Timeline is a HUGE step for social media, and one that photographers in particular should pay attention to.

Here’s why it rocks:

1) Timeline features at huge “cover photo” at the top of every profile. However, “photo” does not mean that you have to use only an image! I see this as free space to highlight whatever you want potential clients to notice. Get creative in Photoshop and put together something that promotes your name, your business, and other useful information.

For me, since I have a hard time keeping up with personal FB messages in addition to my e-mail, I added a quick note about reaching me efficiently.

2) The ability to feature certain news stories is a built-in advertisement for your photography. All you have to do is click the star in the upper right-hand corner of the post you want to feature, and it turns it into a full-page image display. Beautiful, right?!

3) Timeline has added the ability to post “life events,” such as engagements, weddings, and births. All of these events offer the option for your clients to add photos the photos that you’ve taken. Any exposure of your photography is good exposure, and this is a great free way to get it!
